HooptownGTA's 2007-2008 Pre-Season Super 16

(Released November 7, 2007)

#1 Pickering Trojans

The #1 pick on everyone's list....and why not!  They return three starters, that include Devoe & Corey Joseph who both played on the Junior National team this past summer.  They also gained two outstanding players, Jeuvol Myles & Dwayne Smith, who also played on the Junior National team in 2006.  The combination of Devoe Joesph, Cory Joseph, and Jeuvol Myles could possibly be the best back-court in the history of Canadian high school basketball.  New head coach Jim Barclay will have some big shoes to fill with legendary head coach Ron Parfitt retiring and assistant coach Chris Smalling moving onto Centennial College.  Ron Parfitt left the high school basketball scene on top, winning an OFSAA gold medal last season.

#2 Eastern Commerce Saints

The Saints went marching back into familiar territory last season by medaling at 4A OFSAA, after not even qualifying for OFSAA in 2006.  This year's squad is headed by Junior National team member, point guard Keaton Cole who recently committed to Western Carolina.  They also have star players; Tyler Murray (committed to Wagner), Alex Hill (committed to Cornell), and highly recruited Alwayne Bigby who also played on the Junior National team.  Like #1 Pickering, the Saints will also have to go through head coaching changes.  Roy Rana, who won 4 straight gold medals and a silver medal at 4A OFSAA, has retired from high school basketball to concentrate on his new position as Director of Basketball Development with Basketball Ontario.  Last year's assistants Kevin Jeffers & Trevor Bullen will take over the coaching duties in 2007.

#4 Henry Carr Crusaders

Normally you wouldn't expect to see a team that has lost four starters from last year's OFSAA bronze medal team, be ranked so high.  However, this year's squad returns some veteran leadership, newcomer Tramar Sutherland, and a superb Junior class that includes; PG Josh Ogden, SG Justin Bakuteka, SF Nathaniel Elliott and SF Jahmal Grennan.  Senior PG Rodel Grenaway is the only starter back, but has the leadership skills to mold this team into form.  Coach Melnik had a 4th place finish at 4A OFSAA in 2006, and a bronze medal in 2007.  Could this be the season where he captures the gold?!
